Frequently Asked Questions
What can therapy do for me?
Well, it depends on what you want from therapy. Therapy is different for everyone. Here are some common benefits of therapy:
Gaining insight into who you are
Articulating your life goals and wanted outcomes
Gaining more skills to improve your interpersonal relationships
Learning how to ask for help
Managing difficult feelings, such as depression, anxiety, stress, and more
Creating new patterns of behavior
Increasing positive feelings towards yourself
Increasing your ability to problem solve
Challenging old behaviors and thought processes that do not serve you
Much more!
What can I expect from therapy?
The first two sessions for most individuals are similar. Our first session will be your intake session; this is like a “getting to know you” session. I will be asking questions about previous therapy, goals for therapy, and reasons you are starting therapy. I firmly believe in individualized therapy, so our second session will focus on the goals you want to work on in therapy. This session we will make a treatment plan, which consists of making your goals measurable so we can continue to check in with your progress throughout therapy.
After the first two sessions, therapy looks different for everyone. This is because most people have different goals. Not only do people often have different goals, different approaches and skills work for different people. We will work to find what works for you.
Therapy is not a “quick fix”, nor can I tell you how to achieve your goals. I often say that therapy is similar to a road trip - your therapist is your co-pilot, helping navigate the journey. You will be the driver, participating fully throughout the process. We may hit some roadblocks, traffic jams, and often times there may be a detour we have to follow. It is important to be prepared to involve yourself in the process. The more involved you are, the more progress you will be able to see.
A session is typically 53 - 60 minutes long. Some individuals will need to meet weekly, some individuals may meet every other week. We will find what works best for you. Just like the reasons for therapy are different for everyone, most people can expect different experiences. The good news is that therapy is completely individually-focused, which is why everyone can get something different out of it.
